It brings me joy when I connect with other people, especially women, who are working to empower our community. This past weekend I had the privilege of working with Ms. Katrina Walker - Garrett of I Am New, LLC. She and Denita Mcclary of Youth Goals and Financial Education planned an awesome financial wellness event that catered to the ENTIRE family. There were classes on budgeting, credit, and the basics of investing. The older youth even got to play a game where they simulated managing expenses based on what type of career and income given to them. From speaking with a few of the youth, it was definitely eye opening for them.
I was even reminded of some the things that used to trigger me as far as emotional spending, and learned some shocking statistics about Black Americans that I felt were staggering but never actually placed a quantitative value on. The wealth gap is wide and painful to watch increase but experiences like this event give me hope. It is events like these and partnerships with other forward thinking movers and shakers that forge change in our communities. Are you passionate about personal finance?
